Microbial respiration in the asteroid diffusive boundary layer influenced sea star wasting disease during the 2013-2014 northeast Pacific Ocean mass mortality event

چکیده

Sea star wasting disease (SSWD) describes a suite of abnormal signs in affected Asteroidea (Echinodermata). The gained prominence 2013-2014 after it was linked to mass mortality the northeast Pacific Ocean. Recent work highlighted key role heterotrophic microorganisms inhabiting diffusive boundary layer around sea stars generating via oxygen depletion. However, is unclear whether this phenomenon occurred during or how surviving populations may have adapted low conditions. In opinion piece, I outline evidence for both oceanographic conditions experienced by asteroids and from population genetic studies asteroids.

Densovirus associated with sea-star wasting disease and mass mortality.

Populations of at least 20 asteroid species on the Northeast Pacific Coast have recently experienced an extensive outbreak of sea-star (asteroid) wasting disease (SSWD). The disease leads to behavioral changes, lesions, loss of turgor, limb autotomy, and death characterized by rapid degradation ("melting"). Here, we present evidence from experimental challenge studies and field observations tha...

Investigating the Complex Association Between Viral Ecology, Environment, and Northeast Pacific Sea Star Wasting

Sea Star Wasting Disease (SSWD) describes a suite of disease signs that affected >20 species of asteroid since 2013 along a broad geographic range from the Alaska Peninsula to Baja California. Previous work identified the Sea Star associated Densovirus (SSaDV) as the best candidate pathogen for SSWD in three species of common asteroid (Pycnopodia helianthoides, Pisaster ochraceus, and Evasteria...

Ochre star mortality during the 2014 wasting disease epizootic: role of population size structure and temperature.

Over 20 species of asteroids were devastated by a sea star wasting disease (SSWD) epizootic, linked to a densovirus, from Mexico to Alaska in 2013 and 2014. For Pisaster ochraceus from the San Juan Islands, South Puget Sound and Washington outer coast, time-series monitoring showed rapid disease spread, high mortality rates in 2014, and continuing levels of wasting in the survivors in 2015. Pea...

Habitat-forming deep-sea corals in the Northeast Pacific Ocean

We define habitat-forming deep-sea corals as those families of octocorals, hexacorals, and stylasterids with species that live deeper than 200 m, with a majority of species exhibiting complex branching morphology and a sufficient size to provide substrata or refugia to associated species. We present 2,649 records (name, geoposition, depth, and data quality) from eleven institutions on eight hab...

Ultrafine sea spray aerosol over the southeastern Pacific: open-ocean contributions to marine boundary layer CCN

Accurate measurements of natural aerosol emissions over the ocean are needed to estimate the anthropogenic impact on the environment. In this study, we measured sea spray aerosol (SSA) concentrations with diameters larger than 0.040 μm produced by open-ocean breaking waves over the SEP (southeastern Pacific). Robust statistics were established through repeated airborne flights over 1000 km alon...
